An extinguisher should be easily located in your home’s kitchen, basement, and garage. (And hopefully, this serves as a reminder to have a fire extinguisher at home too).

4. Have an escape plan

No one ever thinks a fire will happen in their home, but you want to play it safe and have a solid plan if it does happen. Wildfires are one of the home emergencies in Colorado that happen often. If you live in a condo unit, know where the emergency exits are on your floor and any other vital information the association recommends. Make sure everyone knows the quickest and safest way out of a house. Practice this plan with the entire family and pick a specific spot to meet outside.

5. Locate the emergency toolbox and contact phone numbers

Northern Colorado gets windy, and power outages due to wind are not uncommon. We’ve also been known to get heavy snow occasionally. That’s why having a “toolbox” in a specific location is essential for all family members to access. Fill it with flashlights, batteries, water, dry goods, and other necessary items. Know how to use a gasoline generator before a storm strikes, and that goes with any natural gas heating device too.

Also, have a handy list printed for the family so they can quickly contact the fire department, ambulance, police, plumber, electrician, and power company for an emergency.
