How to Make Your Home Healthier (And Happier) with Simple Changes

Homeowner Highlights

Isn’t it about time our homes became our sanctuaries? Somewhere we can escape the chaos, breathe easy, and just feel good? Welcome to the first part of my 4-week series: How to Create a Happy and Healthy Home Inside and Out. Get ready to transform your living space into a haven of health and happiness without breaking the bank.

Make your home more with simple changes, healthy

First up, let’s talk about making your home healthier.

We all know how to take care of ourselves—eating right, getting some exercise in (maybe chasing after the kids or the dog counts, right?). But have you ever thought about how healthy your home is? Our houses can sometimes be silent troublemakers, hiding allergens, toxins, and other nasties that can affect our well-being.

Let’s kick those out and make our homes the true sanctuaries they’re meant to be. Here are some tips to get started:

Banish Dust Bunnies

Dust isn’t just a chore—it’s a mix of dead skin, pet dander, and pollen that can seriously mess with your air quality. Dust mites, those little pests, feast on this stuff. Gross, right? Here’s how to keep them at bay:

  • Vacuum with a HEPA Filter: Target carpets, drapes, and even your air vents. Use those attachments you’ve been ignoring!
  • Damp Dusting: Use damp cloths or electrostatic dust mops to capture dust without making it airborne.
  • Bedroom Cleanliness: Consider allergen-proof covers for your mattress and wash your bedding in hot water weekly.
  • Regulate Humidity: Keep it between 40-50% to reduce dust and deter mites.
  • Declutter: Less stuff means less dust. Plus, it’s a good excuse to finally tackle that garage!
  • Sanitize Kids’ Toys: Especially if they spend more time on the floor than in their toy box.
  • Hardwood Floors Over Carpets: Easier to clean and less inviting for dust mites.
  • Leave Shoes at the Door: Keeps dirt and pollen outside where it belongs.

Let the Fresh Air In

Modern homes are so well-sealed they sometimes trap more pollutants inside than the air outside. Let’s fix that:

  • Open Windows: Fresh air can do wonders, just watch out for high pollen days.
  • Regularly Change Filters: Especially furnace and AC filters. Set a reminder on your phone.
  • Air Purifiers: A portable one with HEPA filters can make a big difference.
  • Houseplants: Not only do they look good, but plants like peace lilies and snake plants also help purify the air.

Check Product Labels for Toxins

Everyday items can bring unwelcome chemicals into your home. Here’s how to minimize their impact:

  • Natural Furniture: Opt for solid wood over engineered wood to avoid formaldehyde.
  • Natural Fabrics: Think cotton, linen, and wool instead of polyurethane foam.
  • Flame Retardants: Check labels to avoid these chemicals in new sofas.
  • Off-Gas New Items: Let new furniture sit in the garage for a bit before bringing it inside.
  • Non-Toxic Cleaners: Make your own with vinegar and baking soda or look for EPA’s “Safer Choice” label.
  • Safe Cookware: Swap out old Teflon pans for stainless steel or cast iron.

Dilute Any Moisture or Water Issues

Moisture is the enemy. It promotes mold and mildew, which can wreak havoc on your health. Here’s how to manage it:

  • Reduce Dampness: Use exhaust fans in bathrooms, dehumidifiers in basements, and keep your attic well-ventilated.
  • Fix Leaks Promptly: Don’t let small issues turn into big problems.
  • Water Quality: Know what’s coming out of your taps. Consider installing a filtration system.

By taking these steps, you’ll create a healthier environment for you and your family. And it doesn’t have to be expensive or time-consuming—most of these changes are simple and quick to implement.

Do You Have a Carbon Monoxide Detector Installed? Most homeowners can do this on their own, if you need a reference this is my go to. Handyman services
